"I could either design the candle, and spend a lot of time telling you about the candle, or I could design the room that it sits in." — V.A.
Marcel Duchamp, depending on the perspective, is either the most over celebrated provocateur of the 20th century or the pivotal force in reconceptualizing what art can be.
Fountain (1917) is his most famous readymade sculpture — a porcelain urinal signed "R. Mutt". He submitted the piece to the inaugural exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, but it was never placed in the show area on the jury’s assessment that it didn’t qualify as art. Explaining readymades, Duchamp said they are “everyday objects raised to the dignity of a work of art by the artist's act of choice.”
A century later, the prolific artist and designer, Virgil Abloh, would speak fondly of the man he considered his greatest inspiration. In a 2017 Harvard University lecture, Virgil defined his “3% Approach.” The rule was based on his concept that he only needed to change a design or product by 3% from its original state to establish authorship.
WAVE 0.7 is the third WAVE in RUNWAY 5, a limited pre-release series of five WAVES spotlighting watershed works of art in debt to their context.
